I’m breaking the cello only video rule today cause I’m pretty blown away by the bassist and jazz musician who beat out The Beib for this year’s New Artist Award Grammy. Gasp. I love watching her expressions as she plays; its great to see artists really feeling their music. It recalls the great tradition of jazz vocalists/musicians of whom I think she’s inherited much from: artists like Louis, Ella, Sarah and Dinah.
This video is part of the NPR tiny desk concert series, which features musicians playing in intimate settings; sans studios or sets. My favorite way.
Plus, bass is one of those instruments (in addition to “big guitar”) often bandied about in the “what’s in the case” game. You know the one strangers play at the sight of your cello en route to lessons or orchestra. So this week’s video spot is dedicated to our big cousin bass. Enjoy!
